Deer rifles for the Kansas firearm season

Kansas produces some of the biggest whitetail bucks in the country and has mule deer in the west. For 2026 the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks set the regular firearm season for December 2 to 13, with extended antlerless-only firearm days in some units in January 2027. What is legal

During firearm seasons you may use centerfire rifles, centerfire handguns, shotguns with slugs and muzzleloaders, subject to KDWP rules on cartridges and equipment. Rimfire cartridges are not legal for deer. Check the regulations for any minimum cartridge requirements before you buy.

Kansas shots are longer

Much of Kansas is open crop and pasture land. A shot across a wheat field or a milo stubble can stretch to 300 yards, while creek-bottom timber in the east brings shots closer. Pick a flat-shooting cartridge and practice at distance.

6.5 Creedmoor: accurate, mild recoil, excellent at longer range.
.270 Winchester: flat and proven on prairie whitetails and mule deer.
.308 Winchester: short action, wide ammunition choice.
.30-06 Springfield: handles any deer in the state.
7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum: for the longest western Kansas shots, with more recoil.
.243 Winchester: for youth hunters, with a good 95-100 grain bullet.

Rifle and optics

A bolt-action rifle with a 3-9x, 3-12x or 4-16x scope covers almost every Kansas hunt. Look at the Ruger American, Savage 110, Tikka T3x, Bergara B-14, Browning X-Bolt and Winchester XPR. A bipod or shooting sticks help on open ground. Sight in at 100 yards and learn your holds at 200 and 300.

Blaze orange

Kansas firearm deer hunters must wear a hat and at least 100 square inches of blaze orange on the front and back of the upper body during firearm seasons. Check the rules for any other hunters in the field at that time.
