Most of our shelf is CZ pistols and carbines, but plenty of Kansas buyers also hunt. For them, and for a son or daughter about to take a first deer, we carry the Fierce Firearms Mini Rogue line, a light carbon bolt rifle that sits well beside a Scorpion in the safe.

Fierce built these rifles for youth, women and smaller-framed hunters. A shorter length of pull and an adjustable comb or push-button cheek piece make the rifle fit, and a carbon fiber stock keeps it easy to carry. Kansas hunting suits it well: whitetail along timbered creek bottoms in the east, mule deer and pronghorn on the open short-grass country out west. Pick 6.5 Creedmoor for wind on the plains, or 7mm-08 for brushy draws.

308 Winchester is the classic all-round hunting round: proven on deer, hogs and black bear, with factory ammunition available everywhere. In a rifle this light, 308 recoil is noticeable for a small buyer; a 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08 is the gentler start.

Fierce builds the Carbon Mini Rogue on its stainless steel two-lug action. A short 70-degree bolt throw keeps the scope clear, and the Bix'n Andy Dakota trigger can be adjusted to suit the buyer.

This rifle has a 20 in barrel, 4+1 capacity, and weighs about 5.8 lb. Finish: Forest Carbon Fiber Camo.

A teen who has shot a 9mm carbine already knows how stock fit feels. On a bolt rifle with a scope, the same rule applies. Set the length of pull so the trigger finger reaches naturally, then raise the comb until the eye is centered in the scope. A first hunting rifle in 22 or 6.5 Creedmoor builds steady shooting before a step up to 308.
